The NC Geodetic Database supports the following methods of navigation:
To search for monuments, click the search tool to activate the Search panel. Enter one or more criteria and click the search button in the bottom right corner of the panel. In some cases multiple search criteria can be combined together. For example entering a search address, radius, and county will perform a search for all monuments within the specified radius from the address the specified address within the selected county.
The following search criteria are supported:
A map theme is a collection of map layers. The Standard Theme includes the Basemap and Active Monuments with Political Areas and Imagery displayed when zoomed into a high level of detail. The Advanced Theme adds Contractor Monuments, Monuments Under Construction, and Destroyed Monuments as well as the layers in the Standard Theme.

The NC Geodetic Database application can be configured to display eight layers: Basemap, Imagery, Active Monuments, Contractor monuments, Under Construction, Destroyed Monuments, Political Areas, and Flood Zones. Checking or unchecking the check box to the left of the map will show or hide the map. Note. The Political Areas and Imagery layers are only shown when zoomed to a high level of detail. Selecting a Map Theme will reset the visible layers.
Displays a legend with currently visible layers and associated symbology.

Political Area Symbology |
The Imagery Opacity tool controls the opacity of the Image layer if it is currently visible on the map.
The measure area tool measures the area of a specified region with the result displayed in Acres, Sq. Miles, Sq. Kilometers, Hectares, Sq. Yards, Sq. Feet, or Sq. Meters. To use the tool, click the Area tool on the panel. Use the mouse to click the vertices of the area to be measured. Double click the mouse to complete defining points. The result will be displayed in the panel.
The measure area tool measures linear distance with the result displayed in Miles, Kilometers, Feet, Meters or Yards. To use the tool click the Distance tool on the panel. Use the mouse to click the vertices of the line to be measured. Double click the mouse to complete and display the result in the panel.
The location tool displays the longitude and latitude of a selected location. Click the location tool; click a desired position on the map. The result will be displayed on the panel.
Distances in Monument Details can be set to display in US Survey Feet, Meters, and International Feet.
The Monument Summary panel contains the following elements:
Displays summary details of the currently selected monument.
Use this tool to get driving directions from a specified location to the current monument. Click the tool will open the Get Driving Directions panel. On this panel enter the desired address and click the search address button to the right of the text entry. A list of possible address matches will appear. Select the best address match and click Get Driving Directions. Driving directions and a map will be displayed in a new browser window.
Click the Station Recovery button to submit a Monument Recovery report. For NGS Monuments, a new browser window will open displaying the NGS Mark Recovery Entry form. For NCGS or Contractor monuments, the Station Recovery panel will appear. Enter appropriate information, fields marked with an Asterisk (*) are required. Click Submit to send the information to NCGS for review.
Click View Monument Details to display detailed and historical data on the current monument including Position, Elevation, Description, Photographs and Visibility diagram. Photos and Visibility diagram may not be available for all monuments.
Click Add To My Folder to add the monument to My Folder. Monuments in My Folder are saved for future sessions and can be used to quickly retrieve information for commonly referenced monuments or to perform Inverse and Reverse calculations or to perform Data Export. The maximum number of monuments permitted in My Folder is 100.
Click Search Near Here to find monuments within a specified radius of the currently selected monument. When clicked, the Search panel will open with the Latitude and Longitude of the current monument. Modify the search radius as desired and click the search icon on the lower right corner of the panel to complete the search.
The My Folder panel displays monuments currently in My Folder. To remove monuments from the list, check the box to the left of the desired monument and click the Remove button on the bottom of the panel. To remove all monuments, check the box to the left of the County heading in the first column and click the Remove button at the bottom of the panel.
Select the Inverse tool to perform Inverse and Reverse calculations between pairs of monuments in My Folder. On the Inverse Calculator select two monuments from the list of monuments in My Folder by checking the box to the left of the Monument. The selected pairs of monuments must have the same horizontal datum. Click Calculate Inverse to display the calculated Inverse between the selected monuments. Inverse calculations can be added to the report for multiple sets of monuments. Click Reverse Report to display the Reverse.
Click the Contact NCGS to contact NCGS via E-mail. When clicked, a new e-mail message should appear with the subject "NCGS Survey Station Details". This feature requires a default mail program defined on your computer.
The Map Export function generates a PDF document of the current map sized to 8.5x11 or 11x17 inch paper. Select the desired paper size, click Print. A panel will appear prompting for the map name. Enter the desired map name and click Print. A PDF document will be generated. Depending on the configuration of your web browser, the resulting document may appear in the web browser window or you will be prompted for a location to save the map document.
The data export enables the export of attributes of monuments to a text file that can be opened in a variety of programs such as a text editor or a spreadsheet program. Monument attributes can be exported for the entire state or for selected monuments in My Folder. To export monuments state-wide, choose the Entire State radio button and click Download. To export selected monuments from My Folder, check the box to the left of the desired monument. To remove all monuments, check the box to the left of the County heading in the first column. Click Select Fields to select the attributes to be exported. To select additional fields or to deselect fields, hold the Control (Ctrl) button on the keyboard while clicking the fields. When finished, click Export Monument Data. Depending on the configuration of your web browser, the resulting document may appear in the web browser window or you will be prompted for a location to save the data file. Data export time is dependent on the number of selected monuments and attributes. An Entire State export will download a recent summary generated by the NCGS staff.
